Contact Lens

What to Expect During a Contact Lens Exam

If you’re new to contact lenses, the thought of inserting something into your eye might feel a bit intimidating. But don’t worry! A contact lens exam is designed to ensure your lenses fit properly, feel comfortable, and provide clear vision. Here’s what you can expect during your visit.

Step 1: Comprehensive Eye Exam
Before fitting you with contacts, your eye doctor will assess your overall eye health and vision. This includes:

  • Health history discussion – Reviewing any eye conditions or medical concerns

  • Vision testing – Checking how well you see at different distances

  • Eye health evaluation – Examining the retina, optic nerve, and eye pressure

  • Refraction test – Determining the best prescription for your contact lenses

Step 2: Discussing Your Contact Lens Preferences
Not all contact lenses are the same! Your doctor will discuss options based on your lifestyle, vision needs, and comfort preferences:

  • Daily disposables vs. reusable lenses – Do you prefer the convenience of daily lenses?

  • Soft vs. rigid gas-permeable lenses – Which material suits your eyes best?

  • Specialty lenses – Need lenses for astigmatism, presbyopia, or dry eye? We’ve got options!

Step 3: Measuring Your Eyes for the Perfect Fit
To ensure your lenses fit comfortably and provide crisp, clear vision, your doctor will take precise measurements.

Tear Film Evaluation for Dry Eye Patients

If you experience dry eye symptoms, your doctor may perform a tear film evaluation to check your eye’s moisture levels. If your eyes are dry, more hydrating or specialty contact lenses (like scleral lenses) may be recommended.

Step 4: Trial Lens Fitting
You’ll be fitted with a trial pair of contact lenses, and our team will:

  • Check lens movement & alignment – Ensuring a stable, comfortable fit

  • Test your vision – Verifying that the prescription provides clear sight

  • Give you wear & care instructions – Teaching you how to insert, remove, and care for your lenses

Step 5: Follow-Up & Ordering Your Contacts
You will have the opportunity to take your contacts home to try them out and make sure:

  • The lenses fit comfortably • Your eyes are staying healthy

  • Your vision is clear

Once everything checks out, you’re ready to order your contact lenses!
